Here we go…
I have dreamed of being a full-time artist my whole life but never really thought it would happen. There were lots of factors for why I never thought I would be a full-time artist - mental health struggles, over active survival instinct, imposter syndrome, and the devaluing of art and artists in our society to name a few. Well, I’m older now, my kids are off living their own lives, and I finally found my art.
In the ceramic arts I have found my home. There is something about getting my hands muddy, about using the elements of earth, water, air, and fire to create, and about the focus and patience clay requires that soothes me and settles my brain.
I had only been playing with clay for about 5 months when my instructor/mentor, John of Zebulon Pottery, suggested I sell my work. I told him that was the plan but I knew my work wasn’t ready - John disagreed and the ball started rolling.
I talked to my husband, Scott, and our kids, who all offered enthusiastic encouragement. Then I played with possible names, researched all the things (selling platforms, pos systems, how to start a business, packing & shipping, signs, bags, etc.). I’m having ongoing conversations with John about making and selling pottery (he said make mugs, mugs, and more mugs). Created moonflowercreativepots.com and @moonflowercreativepots on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok (not sure what to do with TikTok yet). And of course I’ve been making mugs, mugs, and more mugs.
It’s been a busy couple months and I’m still figuring out some logistics. But, ready or not, my work with be selling at my first market and in the Moonflower Creative Pots online store in one short month.
It’s all so exciting and daunting and messy and I am loving every minute of it.
